Jama Masjid-Symbol Of Unity and An Architectural Marvel

Category Historic, Religious

Located in the heart of the city and constructed in black Sangekhara stone, the Jama Masjid is not only a hallmark of architectural marvel but also exemplifies cultural unity of that era. The masjid. constructed by Adil Shah Farouqi II during Farouqi rule took five long years, day and night to complete. This magnificent structure. 148 feet long and 52 feet wide looks quite fascinating with immaculate interiors, architectural style and patterns. The entire structure rests on 15 bows (karnaan) which are raised on 96 pillars in such a way that they form the roof of the masjid. The masjid has 5 hallways (dalaan) vertically and 15 horizontally which can accommodate more than 3 thousand worshipers for religious gatherings. Thanks to its echo system, one can be seen and heard by all during large mass gatherings, while standing at the very center, without any need for a public address system.Arabic and Sanskrit inscriptions in the hallway not only mark the Farouqi ancestry but also bear proof of the date, time, day and month of the establishment of the holy mosque. It was during Jahangir’s regime that a 12 feet high door was constructed where earlier stood none. The construction of a large gate and rooms for lodging later marked the Nizam’s royal visit.Intricate carvings and designs speak a lot about the unified glories of different civilizations. The two big minarets of the mosque at a height of 130 feet rise majestically across the Burhanpur skyline.
