Asirgarh - Mystery, thrill and deceit
DirectionSituated at a distance of 20 km north of Burhanpur, in the Satpura range, Asirgarh Fort is also known as the “Gibraltar of India” due to its strategic geographical location. A shroud of uncertainty surrounds the fort regarding facts and records related to its construction. History suggests that the fort was built by a herdsman named Asa Ahir and was later strengthened by the Farooqi rulers. However, legends associated with the Shiva temple located here link the fort to the period of the epic Mahabharata. It is believed that Ashwatthama (a character mentioned in the Mahabharata) came here to worship Lord Shiva.
Asirgarh Fort, a beautiful specimen of Mughal architecture, is a marvel of workmanship and design. A visit to the fort feels like a journey through several kingdoms of that era. The fort bears constructions by rulers of different dynasties such as the Chauhans, Farooqis, and the mighty Mughals, who either invaded or ruled Asirgarh. The illustrious past of Asirgarh has witnessed many interesting stories from history. An intriguing fact about the fort is that it was never conquered through fair warfare, but was always captured through strategic planning, conspiracy, or deceit. Even the great Emperor Akbar had to resort to careful planning to gain control of the fort.
The Gupteshwar Mahadev Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, is built in the architectural style of ancient South Indian temples and is a major tourist attraction. The Jama Masjid, constructed in black stone, upholds the grandeur of the Mughal era. The presence of both the temple and the mosque within the fort highlights its religious significance for different communities.
Asirgarh Fort is fortified into three levels: Malaygarh, Kamargarh, and the unassailable Asirgarh. Visitors can reach the top via stairways, while adventure seekers may choose a more challenging path filled with thrill and excitement. The view from the summit is breathtaking, offering a sense that history has emerged from the past to narrate the glorious tales of the great dynasties that once ruled here and perished, leaving behind immortal memories.
