Gurudwara Badi Sangat-Priceless Heritage

Category Historic, Religious

The holy banks of sacred Tapti bear witness not only to the times of royal kingdoms but have also been appeased by the gracious presence of legendary saints and gurus. The saint whom the world today knows as Guru Gobind Singh gave a new meaning of devotion and power to the world. The connection of Sikh community to Burhanpur dates back to early 18th century when Shri Guru Gobind Singh Ji visited the town with Bahadurshah in 1708. Appointed as the 10th Guru of Sikh community at the tender age of 9. Guru Gobind Singh, the upholder of truth, did not hesitate to even sacrifice his four sons in his fight against injustice. His bravery and warfare tactics were appreciated even by the Mughals. Always dressed in the garb of a soldier. Guru Gobind Singh recognized the need for the formation of a community based on the principles of bravery and compassion (not one based on discrimination) to keep the nation united. It was thus that he blessed the Sikh community with ‘Khalsa Panth’. The Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb was also compelled to bow before his tactics and ideology. His compassion won over his enemies, turning them into friends. He even helped Bahadur-shah, son of the Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb, (against whose atrocities he raised his sword) to not only ascend the throne of Delhi but eventually to become emperor of India. It is said that when Kaambaksh (the fourth son of Aurangzeb) revolted in the south. Bahadurshah requested Guru Gobind Singh ji to accompany him to Deccan. The Guruji accepted his request. as he himself wanted to empower the Sikh community by meeting the mighty Rajputana and Maratha rulers. That is when Guruji reached Burhanpur and stayed here for 6 months 9 days and preached sangat for 20 days. A handwritten holy scripture. Guru Granth Sahib (which Guru Gobind Singh declared as the last Guru of Sikh Community after him) enshrines at Badi Sangat Gurudwara. There is a hut near Badi Sangat Gurudwara where the Guru resided at the time of his visit and also the samadhi of his disciple Hatheh Singh. near the hut.
