Bibi ki Masjid-The first Jama Masjid

Dotted with many architectural specimen and ruins of the past, the city holds many memories When Burhanpur was under Farouqi rule, King Azam Humayun (Adil Shah Farouqi) built the first Jama Masjid (Bibi ki Masjid) for his beloved queen ‘Rukaiyya Begum’. Bibi ki Masjid was first built in the north of Burhanpur in Etwara, where majority of the population resided. The present Jama Masjid (earlier known as Bibi ki Masjid) is constructed in the center of the city to make it accessible for all the people living in Burhanpur. It took a long time for Gujarati artisans to complete this wonderful construction. The stone used was brought from Asirgarh mines. Reflecting Gujarati art in its architecture. the masjid bears a striking similarity to the Jama Masjid in Ahmedabad. It was the main center for learning (Madarsa) of Arabic and Farsi language. The masjid is said be a wonderful example of both Indian and Islamic architectural style.

Being close to the Maharashtra state border, there is a very good road to Bhusawal, Jalgaon, Aurangabad etc. The distance between Burhanpur and Bhopal is 367 km via Indore and 326 km via Mundi.
