Shahi Hamam- Ancient Royal Spa
In the royal palace itself Shahjahan had got one hamam made for his most beloved Begum Mumtaz. It is in two parts, in the first part there is a large cistern in which a marble fountain is installed. There was hot and cold water in the room. Water was being let into the canal through a pipe. For hot water many huge furnaces were built outside the fountains in which water was heated in big cauldrons. Then the same water was poured into the channels and cold water came from the other channel. Near this in the other part three cisterns were also made in which water of perfume of rose, kewra and khus used to be filled. There is a small pond nearby which has the shape of a lotus. Maybe it was made for children. It is said that after bathing in the first fountain, Mumtaz used to bathe in these perfumed fountains on different days. The entire layout of the hamam is of the Iranian style. The walls are of brick, and the floor of marble. A lamp was kept in the hamam for illumination, due to which the whole hamam used to glow from the diamond fixed in the hamam. The shadow of the carved paintings done on the walls is also seen in the Taj Mahal.
